How to make a Quilt - A Beginners Guide

Quilting is incredibly fun and despite it's reputation as fussy and intricate it actually allows you to create cozy and personalized pieces of art. To make a quilt, you will need a few essential supplies.

STEPS

  1. The first step is to choose your fabric. Select fabrics that complement each other and consider the overall look you want to achieve for your quilt.
  2. Next, you will need to cut your fabric into squares or strips of equal size using a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat. Precision is key in quilting to ensure that your pieces fit together seamlessly.
  3. Once you have cut your fabric pieces, arrange them in a design that you find pleasing. You can lay them out on a flat surface to experiment with different layouts until you find the perfect arrangement.
  4. After you have finalized your design, it's time to start sewing the pieces together. Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance and press your seams open to reduce bulk and create a smooth finish.
  5. Once your quilt top is complete, it's time to add waddng (batting) and backing fabric. Layer the backing fabric, batting, and quilt top together, then baste the layers to hold them in place.
  6. I prefer to use a glue basting spray but you can hand baste with needle and threade or use special basting safety pins.
  7. Finally, quilt the layers together using your sewing machine or hand quilting techniques. You can choose from a variety of quilting designs such as straight lines, free-motion quilting, or intricate patterns to add texture and dimension to your quilt.
  8. To finish your quilt, trim any excess wadding and backing fabric, then bind the edges with fabric strips. See the video below for how to attach a seamless quilt binding.
