Gift Guide for Crafters and Makers
Gifts for makers can be tough to nail.
But don't worry, we've got you covered! Our gift guide has something special for everyone, from DIY enthusiasts to textile artists.
Finding a gift for someone can be difficult but when your buying for a crafty person, it can be doubly so! Often the things they want or need are specialised and hard for just anyone to find. Or they have everything (or make everything) themselves anyway. I have the perfect gift guide for anyone in this situation! This is a broad gift guide for makers of all kinds though as a sewer and crocheter some of my suggestions are a little biased.
Don’t get stuck, get a Craft Subscription Box
The first suggestion I have for you is a subscription box, something like what's offered by the Dalia Society, where you get a certain amount of new products to try. You get patterns, you get notions, maybe a little treat in there. It's a really great way of showing someone that you care about that you know that they love this hobby, but that you're not silly enough to try and select every single thing yourself when you don't know what it is.
The gift that keeps on giving: A Magazine Subscription
Another great option is to get a magazine subscription. There are many options available that cater to different types of crafts, from knitting to woodworking. For handcrafts, something like Peppermint Magazine or Sew and Tell would be a really great thing for someone who is really into crafts and sustainability. All of these magazines have great subscriptions that usually come with a free gift, and it’s a gift that keeps on giving, as new issues will arrive throughout the year and provide inspiration and instruction for new projects.
Think Local!
It's important to think about shopping locally, particularly when it comes to something like crafting and making things. Instead of picking something specific yourself that they then have to try and use, get them a gift voucher to a local craft store, a local yarn store, a sewing center, or a quilt shop. This is something that they would really love but they may not splurge on themselves with all the time because you know they're a more handmade artisanal place but that they would love to get to shop at.
Everything they need is in a Craft Kit!
Most crafters I know love trying new crafts even if they're experts at some old ones. So maybe have a look at craft kits like the ones that I actually make and sell. I love getting kits for new crafts and trying all the different things, but I also don't like going out and spending lots of money to try and get every single different item that I need to successfully try the new thing. That's where craft kits are really fantastic. They have all the things that you need to be able to start making that item in a handy little put-together package that's all beautiful and ready to go with instructions. Then you just get started.

The gift of new skills: Classes!
Let's talk about the gift of new skills! How about a class voucher? You know, for something totally wild like knitting, sewing, or something totally new that's been calling their name. For example, yours truly adores sewing, but I've never tried leatherworking, lingerie making, or even teddy bear crafting! So, why not find a local spot that specializes in those types of sewing? And if your friend loves crochet or knitting, why not give them a gift card to learn how to spin or dye their own yarn? The possibilities are endless! Plus, you'll be supporting a local maker or studio, which is way better than just a boring old gift card.
A good book is good for anyone!
The next one is again about knowledge, but this one is through books. Often, people will have books that they've saved that they really want to try. Maybe they've mentioned it to you, you don't remember. It's a good idea to have a look at what the bestsellers are, but maybe they also want to try something a little bit different. Like this year, I've just started to get into bag making, so I've asked my mum to give me a bag-making book for Christmas. That would be something that you wouldn't really be able to tell from what I have on my shelf right now, but it's something that I really do want to try, and getting a book is a great way of being able to just give that a go.
A unique sewing gift: A Copy Shop Voucher
A great one for sewist’s in particular is a voucher to a copy shop. Getting your sewing pattern printed in A0 can be really expensive. So, being able to say actually, you don't have to print them out yourself and put them together, a voucher so you can go and take all those lovely new patterns that you have already bought and actually get them printed so that you can make them really easy, really fast once they're on an A0 print.
Surprise Them with Unique Craft-Related Merchandise
If you're looking for something unexpected to give your loved ones, consider browsing through Etsy or my own shop for some craft-related merchandise. This option is a great way to support local small businesses and you're sure to find something that speaks to their interests. From mugs and t-shirts to tote bags and stickers, there are so many options to choose from. With phrases like "Stitch Witch" and other clever sayings, these items are not only practical, but fun and whimsical. Don't hesitate to add this to your list of gift ideas.

A Practical Crafting Choice: The Crafting Light
Crafters, have you considered adding a crafting light to your toolkit? It's a versatile tool that can be used in a variety of ways. For instance, I have one that goes around my neck and use it for crochet, paper piecing, reading, and even cooking in the dark while camping. But its primary purpose is to provide extra light while crafting. This is especially helpful for hand stitching and embroidery, where the spotlight can help you focus on your work, even in normal lighting conditions.
Upgrading and Personalizing Crafting Tools
When it comes to crafting, there are several ways to personalize or improve one's tools. Upgrading scissors or seam rippers can be a great place to start. These tools often become dull with use, so consider either sharpening them or upgrading to a new, personalized pair. There are many handmade seam rippers available on the market, which make for a thoughtful gift. Other upgrades to consider include items such as a stiletto or custom needles, hooks, and acrylic templates. Gauges for yarncraft and sewing are also useful tools that can come in beautiful packaging and be personalized. These little extra details can make all the difference when it comes to crafting.
Charming Vintage and Historically Inspired Gifts
Apart from practical sewing supplies, there are some truly adorable vintage or historically inspired items that are simply stunning. For example, the chatelaine, which was frequently used by Victorian housekeepers to hold their sewing supplies. You can also find needle keepers and other small trinkets that are both beautiful and make great gifts.
Handy Gadgets for Enthusiasts
If you're looking for a gift for someone who loves sewing, there are some cool gadgets you could consider. While some of these items can be a bit pricey, they will save a significant amount of time in the long run. For instance, a bias tape maker or a bobbin winder would be a great option. If the person you're buying for is into fiber crafts, something like a swift or a yarn winder would be an excellent choice because it works well, packs down small, and is incredibly helpful. For those who enjoy finer sewing tasks like embroidery or hand sewing, a bobbin winder can be incredibly useful. It can turn a long task into a much shorter one, which is always a plus.
Custom Labels: The Perfect Addition for Crafters
Crafters everywhere would love to personalize their creations with their name on it. Whether it's for personal use or as a gift, custom labels are a beautiful way of celebrating the hard work and dedication that goes into each piece. It's a great way to show off the love and passion for their craft.
Tool Bags and Cases
If you're searching for the perfect gift for a maker in your life, consider a tool bag or case. Tool bags and cases are incredibly useful for most makers or you could get them a kit so that they could make their own something. It's an essential item that can help them organize and transport their tools with ease. Alternatively, a DIY kit could be a great option. For instance, a sofa station that can be placed over their armchair or a bag that can be positioned next to their favourite spot to unwind in the evenings. This is a thoughtful way to show your support for their passion.
Innovative Ideas for Makers: Planners and Magnetic Holders for Patterns
Have you ever thought about using a planner specifically designed for makers? Or perhaps a magnetic holder for their sewing or knitting patterns? These holders often come with a magnetic ruler to help them keep track of their progress and colour sequences. Another useful tool is a planner that not only helps you plan but also documents what you've made. You can easily create a planner using a bullet journal or a boju journal. This way, your makers can customize their planner to suit their specific needs.
A Unique Gift Idea for Crafters: A Massage
Crafts can take a long time to complete, and oftentimes require sitting in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. As a thoughtful present for your crafting friends or family, consider treating them to a massage. This will not only help to alleviate any discomfort but also shows that you care about their well-being.
When shopping for a loved one who enjoys crafting, it's best to ask them directly what they would like. There's no harm in being straightforward and expressing your care for them. If you have a specific item in mind, such as a book or class, ask them if it's something they would like and which one they prefer. Remember, it's okay to ask!
That wraps up the gift list. If you know a maker and you believe that any of these presents would be perfect for them, or if you have other ideas for what people might like for Christmas, birthdays, or any occasion, please leave a comment below. I'd love to hear from you and maybe even add your suggestions to my own list!
