Camping Capsule Wardrobe - Part 1 The Shacket
Earlier this year I started pulling together inspiration to create a camping capsule wardrobe. Something that is easy to put together, functional for camping and outdoor activities, stylish and actually fits me and my body properly.
The first item that I am going to make myself for this project is a flannel shacket.
The shacket is really a very lightweight jacket with a collar that can be used to layer and is really comfortable.
The Pattern
The pattern I have selected for this garment is the Ilford Jacket by Friday Pattern company. It's a boxy fit with about a million pocket options, a collar and placket sleeves.
Based on my measurements I am making a 2XL graded to a 3XL at the hips.
I am making the short option but with an extra inch and a half to the length for practicality.
I have also added 3/4 inch to the sleeve length because I almost always have flannel shirts that are too short for my gangly arms.
The Fabric
I have picked a heavy polycotton flannelette from Spotlight in a grey black mix. I really love this fabric, it's heavy enough (250GSM) to be warm and snuggly but with the boxy cut of the jacket it will drape well and allow airflow. It's also a great mix of my neutral colours and will hopefully help to tie all of my other camping wardrobe items together.
The Make
Friday Pattern Companies instructions are always brilliant and so easy to understand! She also has really detailed video instructions on their YouTube channel which I have been using to help me really understand the ins and outs of the pattern, particularly details like the placket and the collar.
The Troubles
I did have trouble with the fit on the sleeves. I made the placket version and once the sleeve got to the wrist the sleeve became very tight. I used up the seam allowance to give me a little extra ease which is enough to make the jacket wearable.
The Fit
Overall I love the fit, the length is perfect and gives just enough of a vintage vibes for my everyday wardrobe while being outdoor ready for all my camping adventures to come.
The Results
I love this jacket and I want to make 10 more and I look forward to making them too!
